IIITG is one of the 20 IIITs being set up by the Central Govt. in PPP mode. IIITG started operations in August 2013. The second batch of 60 students joined in August 2014. There are now 118 students in the Institute. IIITG is operating from temporary premises in the Assam Textile Institute Campus at the heart of the city. There are two 8 Mbps Internet links. Students and some faculty are staying in a flat complex where 33 flats have been taken on rent by the Institute. The hostel complex is connected to the Institute by a wireless link and where is a wi-fi network in the complex. The permanent campus is coming up in 70 acres of land about 4 km from the Guwahati airport. Ph.D Programme conduct in Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
The disciplines in which these programmes will be offered are: Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), and English. The following are areas of research for which admissions are currently sought: CSE: Networks, Information Security, Soft Computing, Image Processing, Operating Systems ECE: Microwaves and Antennas, Communications, Circuits English: Linguistics
Qualifications : Eligibility : For admission to the Ph.D Programme in CSE and ECE, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria: i) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks. ii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks. For admission to the PhD Programme in English, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria. i) M.A in Linguistics with at least 55% marks or a CPI of 6.0
Institute Assistantships : A limited number of assistantships are available in CSE and ECE only at present. Currently there are 3 assistantships each in CSE and ECE from the Institute. However, other support may become available through sponsored projects. A student can apply for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) from CSIR. Assistantships will be available only to regular students.
